7 Day Sumba Road Trip Itinerary
Sumba is one of Indonesia’s most spectacular islands, known for its wild landscapes, traditional villages, and untouched beaches. The best way to explore the island is by road. Many of the most beautiful places are far apart, and travelling by car allows you to reach waterfalls, viewpoints, and remote beaches that are difficult to access otherwise.
A 7 day road trip is the perfect amount of time to experience both the western and eastern parts of Sumba without rushing too much.
This itinerary starts in Tambolaka (West Sumba) and finishes in Waingapu (East Sumba), allowing you to see many of the island’s most famous highlights.
Day 1: Arrival in Tambolaka and Southwest Sumba
Most travellers arrive in Sumba via Tambolaka Airport in the west of the island. After landing, pick up your rental car and start exploring nearby attractions.
A great first stop is Weekuri Lagoon, a beautiful saltwater lagoon surrounded by rocks. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming.
Nearby you will also find Mandorak Beach, a small hidden bay with dramatic cliffs and turquoise water. It is one of the most photogenic beaches in West Sumba.
Spend the afternoon driving along the coast and getting used to the quiet roads and rural landscapes of the island.

Day 2: Ratenggaro Village and Pero Beach
Start the day by visiting Ratenggaro Traditional Village, one of the most famous villages in Sumba. The tall traditional houses with their distinctive high roofs are unique to the island.
The village sits right next to the ocean, which makes the scenery even more impressive.
After exploring the village, continue to Pero Beach, a peaceful surf beach known for its wide shoreline and beautiful sunsets.
Spend the afternoon relaxing by the ocean or watching local surfers in the water.

Day 3: Drive to Waikabubak
Today you will drive north towards Waikabubak, the cultural centre of West Sumba. The drive takes around two to three hours depending on road conditions.
Along the way you will pass through rolling hills, small villages, and traditional farmland.
In Waikabubak you can visit several traditional Sumba villages such as Praijing Village, where you can see traditional houses, stone tombs, and learn more about the island’s culture.
Overnight stay: Waikabubak.
Day 4: Lapopu Waterfall and Wanokaka
One of the highlights near Waikabubak is Lapopu Waterfall, located inside Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park.
It is one of the tallest waterfalls in Sumba and flows down a series of beautiful rock terraces surrounded by forest.
After visiting the waterfall, continue towards Wanokaka to see Weekacura Rice Fields, a peaceful landscape of green terraces and traditional farming.
The scenery here is very different from the dry savannah landscapes that Sumba is also known for.
Overnight stay: Waikabubak.
Day 5: Waikuri Lake and the Drive to East Sumba
Today is the longest driving day of the itinerary as you travel across the island towards Waingapu in East Sumba.
The journey usually takes around five to six hours, but the landscapes along the way make the drive very interesting.
You will pass through open savannah hills, traditional villages, and quiet rural roads.
Arrive in Waingapu in the afternoon and explore the small coastal town.

Day 6: Wairinding Hills and Walakiri Beach
East Sumba is famous for its wide savannah landscapes and dramatic hills.
Start the day by visiting Wairinding Hills, one of the most iconic viewpoints in Sumba. The rolling green hills look especially beautiful in the morning light.
Later in the afternoon head to Walakiri Beach, known for its unique mangrove trees that create amazing silhouettes during sunset.
It is one of the most photographed sunset locations on the island.
Overnight stay: Waingapu.
Day 7: Tanggedu Waterfall or Puru Kambera Beach
On your final day you can choose between two great destinations depending on how much time you have before your flight.
Tanggedu Waterfall is a spectacular canyon-style waterfall located about two hours from Waingapu. The turquoise pools and rock formations make it one of the most unique waterfalls in Sumba.
If you prefer something closer to town, visit Puru Kambera Beach, a long stretch of white sand where wild horses are sometimes seen running along the shoreline.
Return to Waingapu Airport for your departure.

Before starting your road trip, it helps to keep a few practical things in mind.
Distances are large
Many attractions are several hours apart, so plan your driving time accordingly.
Fuel stations can be limited
It is a good idea to refuel when you have the chance, especially when travelling through rural areas.
